The bronco with it's smaller bridge, but broader saddles, kind of sits in the middle. This makes some sence due to the 6 pole stock pu. So, I think in order to make the Aero replacement pu work propperly, a saddle upgrade to the desired 15mm would be a good idea as well, or go with a $ 20,-Misicmaster replacement bridge and have a string thru bridge like the original musicmasters. Though, I feel that a $ 125,- upgrade on a PU is quiet hefty, pricewise. MUSICMASTER BASS PICKUP REPLACEMENT UPGRADE Custom, rich, strong single coil blade pickup. I even think the RI Mustang Pu's were desinged by Seymour Duncan, but I'm not sure.Seymour recommends a Cool Rail. It fits the route, the tone is good for that instrument, and the rails cover the string spacing with no problem.Yeah, I had considered that option. I decided to go with the quarter pounder because I read that someone had replaced their Squier Bronco bass pup, which is essentially the same as the old Fender Musicmaster, with the SCPB-3Īnd had gotten very good results. I guess those old Fender Strat pups they used back then are much better than the Bronco pups used now. Anyway, I do like the tone on the SCPB-3. The thing is, I have to turn the volume on my amp up 2 1/2 times greater to acheive the same amount of output as the original pup. I am gonna keep the quarter pounder installed. I also have a Roland V- Bass pup on the Musicmaster and I am blending both pups so I do get a real nice tone. In designing a more appropriate replacement, the idea came up of adding in extra poles to more closely mimic a P Bass or Jazz Bass design. I have another Musicmaster bass also, but I am gonna keep the stock pup in that one. There's barely enough space for it to work, but boy does it work. It brings a Musicmaster or Bronco to life. Last week I replaced the split coil pup on my inexpensive short scale SX P-Bass with a Quarter Pounder SPB-3. Now that made a HUGE diffrence in both the volume and tone. MUSICMASTER BASS PICKUP REPLACEMENT MODS.MUSICMASTER BASS PICKUP REPLACEMENT UPGRADE.Currently, the coil tap (middle position) of the switch isn't working (it's still parallel in that mode) and I think it's likely due to the switch being a #2 variant of an on-on-on switch rather than the kind that I thought it was. With the switch in "parallel" mode, I get a bit more of the original single coil flavor or something approximating a short scale J-bass vibe. While the original pickups have a cool tone (as they're Mustang pickups), I like the tone of Mustang basses more (with their mini-P-bass pickups) and so the pickup switch to "series" mode gives me that almost-P-bass thump. ![]() The original parts I don't care for on a bass - the pickup, wiring harness, and 2-saddle bridge design - got replaced, however, with a Strat-sized double-blade Alnico-magnet humbucker, volume control, and series/parallel/coil tap switch. It did come to me, however, with completely original bits. Suffice to say - my "lunch break" was spent readying this for service as I'd already ordered the parts I needed to upgrade it.Ĭlearly, this bass has seen a lot of abuse - there's moisture damage, tons of nicks and dings, heat damage, and the original Daphne Blue finish has turned into a splotchy, avocado green with a matchingly-faded "white" pickguard that's now a dusty vanilla-tan. A week later, and it was delivered this afternoon. I spied this one on fleaBay in Florida and its absolutely beat, tired, faded, and holy guacamole character grabbed my attention. After trading my "upgraded" Musicmaster bass to a friend of mine, I was on the hunt for another short scale bass and - after destroying my mind trying to figure out what to get - I decided to get another Musicmaster! I can't help it.
